FIU Athletics continues to raise the bar in the classroom, as student-athletes posted the highest term grade point average in the department’s history after earning a 3.29 GPA for the spring.
The three highest GPAs on record for the athletic department have all come in the last three semesters, with a 3.28 last spring and a 3.27 in the fall of 2018. Furthermore, student-athletes at FIU have posted 10-straight semesters with a department GPA of 3.0 or better.
“We are very proud of the standard our student-athletes, our coaches, and the student athlete academic support staff have set at this university,” said Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia. “Their hard work and commitment to academics has produced outstanding results.”
A total of 15 of FIU’s 18 teams earned a 3.0 or higher for the spring. During the spring term, FIU had 290 student-athletes log a 3.0 GPA or higher, while 103 Panthers earned a GPA of 3.75 or higher. A whopping 167 student-athletes earned a spot on the Dean’s List, which bettered last year’s 103 at FIU.
Earlier this year, FIU student-athletes posted a conference-high 246 members on the C-USA honor roll (3.0 GPA or higher) while also having a league-high 76 academic medal recipients (3.75 or higher) for the academic year. The achievement marked the first time in school history that FIU had been a leader in either category in the C-USA.
The FIU swimming and diving program led the athletic department with 31 members comprising the honor roll list, while the football program landed 29 members. Swim and dive also led the Panthers in academic medal winners, with 12 honorees.
